One Sunday afternoon, the end of January 2009, Ava woke up from her nap and did not want to walk. By Monday she couldn't walk, and would scream and cry when I put her down. We went to the pediatrician and they were stumped, but sent us for blood work. They called that night and said the blood work looked normal, and to come back Friday.
Next day, Tuesday, she was even worse. We got her medical records and headed to a friend of the family who is a family physician. After reviewing Ava and the blood work, he definitely knew something was wrong and sent us directly to Phoenix Children's Hospital. There, we had a very long visit in the ER.
Ava had x-rays and blood tests, and was admitted to the hospital. One week later, Ava was diagnosed with Stage 4 Neuroblastoma, a rare childhood cancer, on February third, 2009.
After six cycles of high dose chemo therapy, a surgery to remove the tumor, fourteen session of radiation, and four more cycles of chemo, she was declared NED (No Evidence of Disease).
She was cancer free for two months, and then relapsed in her brain on December 30 th, 2009.
She is currently in treatment.
Ava loves everything pink, and her favorite book is Pinkalicious. She loves dogs and cats. Her best friend is her big brother Eli who is 4 years old.
